How to Order at a Korean Restaurant Without Speaking Korean

A practical guide to finding a seat, choosing portions, asking for help and paying at a Korean restaurant—with useful Korean phrases.

Start with one question, not a perfect sentence

You do not need fluent Korean to order a meal. You do need to establish three things: whether the restaurant can seat your group, what one order includes, and how to pay. A photo of the dish and a short question are often more useful than a long translated paragraph.

This guide covers an ordinary sit-down meal. A barbecue restaurant, reservation-only venue or kiosk-operated shop may work differently. Follow the instructions at the restaurant rather than assuming every place follows one routine.

Before sitting down

Pause near the entrance and check whether someone is assigning tables. Show the number of people in your group. For one diner, try 혼자 식사할 수 있나요? — “Can I eat here alone?” If there is a waiting list, ask how to join before taking an empty-looking table.

For a restaurant you particularly want to visit, keep its Korean name and full address on your phone. Similar English spellings can refer to different businesses.

Choose a dish and confirm the amount

Point to the menu item and say 이거 하나 주세요 — “One of this, please.” Before using that phrase for a platter or grill order, check the serving size. 몇 인분인가요? means “How many servings is it?” 최소 주문이 있나요? asks whether there is a minimum order.

Count meals separately from drinks and additions. A picture containing rice, soup and a main dish does not prove that every component is included in the displayed price.

When you need help at the table

What you needWhat to show or say
Get attention politely저기요 — Excuse me
Ask for water물 주세요 — Water, please
Find utensils수저는 어디에 있나요? — Where are the utensils?
Ask whether something costs extra추가 요금이 있나요? — Is there an extra charge?

Korea Tourism Organization describes restaurants with table call buttons, utensil drawers and self-service water or side-dish stations. Look around before repeatedly calling a server. Do not assume that every additional dish is a free refill.

Dietary requirements and the bill

For a food allergy or a strict dietary requirement, show the specific ingredient in Korean and ask staff to check. A dish name, photograph or translation app cannot establish whether a stock, sauce or shared cooking surface is suitable. If staff cannot confirm, choose another option.

When finished, ask 계산은 어디에서 하나요? — “Where do I pay?” Confirm the total before paying and keep your receipt if you need to check an unfamiliar charge. At your next meal, repeat the same short sequence: seat, dish, quantity, extras, payment.
