Exploring Incheon: Top Historical and Scenic Spots to Visit

Formed by the growth of Jemulpo, the former gateway to the Korean Sea, Incheon has been home to many of the most important events in Korea’s modern and ancient history. There are plenty of traces of that history throughout the city. Visit Liberty Park, Chinatown, and the former site of Ganghwa Island to hear the stories behind them. freedom Park

This is Incheon’s most iconic park. Located on Nambongsan Mountain in Songhak-dong, Jung-gu, it was opened in 1889 as Korea’s first western-style park for foreign residents of Incheon.

The park features a statue of General MacArthur, the 6. 25 Gakdo Drill Team Memorial Tower, and the 100th Anniversary of U.S.-Korea Diplomatic Relations Memorial Tower. It also includes other sculptures honoring historical events in modern and contemporary history.

The park is popular with locals and tourists alike because of its forests and walking paths. It offers views of Incheon Harbor and the West Sea. Wolmido

Incheon’s representative tourist destination is located in Bukseong-dong. It was developed as an amusement park during the Japanese colonial period. It has been the site of many historical events, including the Russo-Japanese War and the Incheon Landing. Soraepo-gu

Pogu is located in Nonhyeon-dong, Namdong-gu, Incheon. During the Japanese occupation, the area was famous for its salt fields and narrow gauge trains used to transport salt. The fish market in Pogu actively trades shrimp, blue crabs, and other seafood caught offshore. In particular, you can buy a variety of jjigal, such as shrimp jjigal, anchovy jjigal, bandang jjigal, and clam jjigal. It is close to the Seoul metropolitan area, and there is a marine ecological park nearby. This park is crowded with families on weekends. The marine ecological park, which was built on the site of a salt pond, has an ecological exhibition hall, a salt pond learning center, and a tidal flat experience center. Gwangseongbo

Dongmak Beach

Dongmak Beach in Hwado-myeon, Ganghwa-gun, is the only beach in Ganghwa-do. The beach is small. However, at low tide, a vast tidal flat expands. It’s a great place for kids to play in the water and experience the tidal flat at the same time in the summer. Behind the white sandy beach are centuries-old cypress trees, which are perfect for cooling off. At low tide, you can see a variety of sea creatures, including shellfish, crabs, and midges. Nearby Bunoridon-daero is famous for its beautiful sunsets.

Unintentional

Located in Jung-gu, Incheon, Muuido is an island accessible via Yeongjongdo Island. The recent opening of Yeondo Bridge connects Yeongjongdo Island and Muuido Island. This has made it easier to travel to the island. It’s a popular destination for its scenic views of the sea and mountains. Silmi Beach and Hanagae Beach have lush pine forests and wide white sandy beaches. Here, you can enjoy ATVs and zip lines. Hiking enthusiasts will love Horyonggoksan Mountain and Guksabong Mountain. Yeongheungdo Island

Yeongheungdo Island is connected to the mainland by Seonjae Bridge and Yeongheung Bridge. Janggyeong-ri Beach and Siklipo Beach are the island’s most popular beaches. Janggyeong-ri Beach is known for its lush pine forests, wide white sandy beaches, and beautiful sunsets. There are trekking trails all over the island for a casual stroll overlooking the sea. The highest peak, Guksaebong (156 meters), offers a bird’s eye view of the entire island and the West Sea.
