At a Korean eomuk stall, ask how much one skewer costs before taking it, check whether broth is included, and keep track of the number you order. Eomuk (어묵) is fish cake: a pale colour or vegetable garnish does not make it vegetarian.

Identify the fish cake and its broth
The Korea Tourism Organization describes fish cake as a preparation of crushed fish and other ingredients, fried and often sold on skewers simmered in broth at bunsik stalls. Its general guide gives anchovy broth as an example. That explains the category, not every stall’s exact recipe.
Ask about both the fish cake and the liquid if an ingredient matters to you. A folded sheet, a round piece and a stuffed version can have different additions. Do not infer ingredients or prices from shape alone. If you need a particular ingredient excluded, ask before the seller serves it rather than removing a visible garnish afterwards.
Five questions before taking a skewer
| Decision | Korean question |
|---|---|
How much is one skewer? |
| Broth included? Is broth included? |
Is this the spicy fish cake? |
What is the broth made from? |
Two skewers of this, please. What is the total? |
These are Passja’s practical ordering phrases. Point to the exact tray or menu line you mean. If the stall has different prices for different skewers, do not assume that a single large number on the sign applies to all of them.

Count the order and compare the total
Establish whether the seller wants you to order first or choose skewers yourself. Follow that stall’s instructions, including when to pay. Keep track of each item you have agreed to buy; do not assume every seller counts or collects skewers in the same way.
Illustrative calculation, not a current stall quote: if one type is marked ₩1,500 per skewer and another is ₩2,000, two of the first plus one of the second total ₩5,000. Three skewers are not necessarily three times one price when you mix types. Use the figures actually displayed where you order.
Clarify whether a cup of broth is included or separately charged before helping yourself. Likewise, a takeaway soup bowl may be a different product from a skewer eaten at the counter. Ask about the packing and total rather than assuming that both formats cost the same.

Eat without blocking the stall
Broth and freshly served fish cake can be hot. Give them time to cool and start carefully. Use the cup, dish and utensils provided; keep used skewers where the seller directs and never put handled food back into a shared tray.
Stand where you may eat without blocking the queue or a shop doorway. Finish a small order before deciding whether you want more. Neither an old market photograph nor a tourism article establishes today’s opening hours, seating or refill policy.
Sources and current checks
Official food guidance checked October 31, 2026. KTO’s general page states a March 24, 2023 update and supports the fish-cake and broth description. It is not a current stall menu. Korean questions and the price calculation are independent Passja guidance. Photos from 2015, 2016 and 2009 are illustrative and do not establish current prices or operating conditions.
