Reading a Korean Menu: Portions, Rice and Cooking Words Explained

Understand practical Korean menu words before ordering, including steamed rice, serving sizes and common cooking terms.

Translate the decision, not just the dish

A menu translation is useful when it tells you what you need to decide. Is the item a complete meal? Is the price for one serving? Does it describe the cooking method or the main ingredient? Keep those questions separate.

The English explanations below are everyday reading aids. A restaurant’s recipe and included items still need checking at the table.

Words worth recognizing

Korean Useful English explanation
공깃밥 A bowl of steamed rice
1인분 One serving
추가 An addition or extra order
구이 Grilled or roasted food
볶음 Stir-fried food
찜 A steamed or braised preparation; check the particular dish
매운맛 Spicy flavor

Do not translate 공깃밥 literally as “air rice.” In a travel guide, the useful meaning is a bowl of plain steamed rice. Likewise, a word describing a method does not reveal every ingredient.

Read quantities beside the name

Look at the amount and unit printed alongside a meat order or shared dish. Before ordering, ask whether the item has a minimum quantity. Check rice separately if you want it: a photograph of a full table is not a written list of what is included.

If a set menu is offered, point to it and ask what comes with it. Compare the full order you need rather than deciding from the smallest number on the menu.

Use translation apps as a first pass

Take a clear photo with the full line and its price visible. Compare the translation with the original text. When a result sounds implausible, keep the Korean name and ask for clarification rather than accepting the literal English.

For dietary requirements, identify the ingredients you need to avoid, including broth and sauce. Korea Tourism Organization’s vegetarian guidance specifically highlights ingredients that may not be obvious from the main dish. A translated menu is a starting point for that conversation, not a substitute for it.
