National Museum of Korean History: Choose a Guide Before Committing to a Tour

At the National Museum of Korean History, the published regular English tour is Thursday at 14:30, lasts about 50 minutes and uses on-site registration at the entrance to the 5F History Gallery. If that timing does not fit, the museum offers free audio guides and smartphone audio in English.

The museum also uses the English name National Museum of Korean Contemporary History. Save its Korean name, 대한민국역사박물관, and address, 198 Sejong-daero, Jongno-gu, Seoul. This is the modern-history museum beside Gwanghwamun, not the National Museum of Korea in Yongsan.

Choose your guide format

OptionTime and arrangement
Regular English tourThursday 14:30; about 50 minutes; foreign visitors only. Register on site at the 5F History Gallery entrance. Schedule may change.
Reserved guided visitRequest at least 5 business days ahead; minimum 2 people. A museum reply is needed before treating the request as confirmed.
Foreign guest docent groupThe English guide page lists a minimum of 10 foreign visitors; ask about language and availability.
Borrowed audio deviceFree with an ID deposit at the 1F Information Desk. For the 5F History Gallery; English, Korean, Chinese and Japanese.
Smartphone audioScan gallery QR codes in 5F; the same four languages. Museum Wi-Fi is named “museum open.”

The English tour page publishes the Thursday time but directs visitors to a separate Korean schedule page for updates. That page confirms the 5F meeting point, about 50 minutes and first-come participation up to 30 for the full-gallery regular program; its text does not independently establish that every session is in English. Check the date and language with staff rather than joining any gathering and assuming it is the English tour.

What to do before a Thursday tour

A 14:30 start plus the stated 50-minute duration gives an approximate 15:20 finish. Allow additional time afterward to revisit labels or return a borrowed guide. As an independent planning suggestion, arrive around 14:00 to find the entrance, ask about that day’s language and registration, and reach 5F. This arrival buffer is not an official check-in deadline or a guaranteed place.

If you arrive after the group has started, ask staff whether joining is possible. Do not make your entire afternoon depend on catching up. A self-guided visit with English audio is a useful alternative, and you can choose a narrower historical period rather than rushing every display.

Reserved tours are a separate arrangement

For advance guidance, contact +82-2-3703-9252 or 9253, or the museum’s published address m37039200@korea.kr. The English page asks for at least five business days before the desired visit and says staff review requests during business hours. Do not interpret five calendar days, or a sent message alone, as a confirmed booking.

The foreign guest docent option lists English, Chinese, Japanese, Mongolian, French, Azerbaijani, Russian and Turkish. A listed language is not a promise that a guide is available on every date. Give staff your group size, preferred language and date, then wait for their response before adding it as a fixed appointment. The Korean and English pages describe group categories differently, so confirm which program and minimum apply to your party.

Use audio without fixing your day to a tour

The borrowed device is free but requires leaving identification at the 1F Information Desk. Earphones are provided; personal wired earphones may also be used. The service covers the 5F History Gallery, so do not assume a device explains every special exhibition elsewhere in the building.

For smartphone audio, keep your phone charged and use the gallery QR codes. Bring earphones so playback does not disturb other visitors. Choose one part of the chronology: the official guide divides the history narrative into 1894–1945, 1945–1987 and 1987 to the present. Read the introductory context before connecting an individual object with a political or social event.

Admission and opening hours

Museum entry is free. The official visitor page lists 10:00–18:00 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday, and 10:00–21:00 Wednesday and Saturday. Enter at least 30 minutes before closing: that means 17:30 or 20:30 respectively. Holiday closures include January 1, Lunar New Year’s Day and Chuseok; check current notices around those holidays.

Food and drinks are not allowed in exhibition halls. Flash, tripods and commercial photography are prohibited. Follow display-specific restrictions. For general access questions, the museum number is +82-2-3703-9200.
