The National Palace Museum of Korea is free to visit and adds the objects of royal life to a Gyeongbokgung palace outing. Regular hours are 09:30–17:30, with last entry at 17:00; Saturdays and the last Wednesday of each month extend to 21:00, with last entry at 20:30.
October 2026 update: the museum’s calendar marks Monday, October 26 as closed. Do not plan an indoor museum visit for that date. Its regular closure is the last Monday of each month, with a public-holiday exception explained below.

Admission, hours and closures at a glance
| Question | Current official answer |
|---|---|
| Admission | Free until further notice; no museum admission charge is currently listed. |
| Monday–Friday and Sunday | 09:30–17:30; last entry 17:00, except closure dates. |
| Saturday and last Wednesday | 09:30–21:00; last entry 20:30. |
| Regular closures | January 1, Seollal day, Chuseok day and the last Monday each month. |
| Holiday exception | If the last Monday is a public holiday, the closure moves to after the holiday. Check the date-specific calendar for consecutive holidays. |
The current Korean visitor guide and English homepage agree on these times. Older tourism descriptions and the older English brochure state different hours or a one-hour last-entry cutoff. Use the museum’s current visitor guide and dated calendar rather than carrying those older details into your plan.
Free museum admission does not mean your other palace activities are free or included. Treat palace entry, any booked tour and the museum as separate itinerary decisions, with their own entrances and conditions.
Which station exit should you use?
Save 국립고궁박물관 / National Palace Museum of Korea, 12 Hyoja-ro, Jongno-gu. The official access guide lists Gyeongbokgung Station, Line 3, exit 5: about 2 minutes on foot, or exit 4: about 4 minutes. From Gwanghwamun Station, Line 5, exits 1 or 2, allow about 10 minutes.
These are the operator’s approximate walking times, not a guarantee for every pace or accessible route. Follow current station signs and ask staff for a step-free approach if you need one. A meeting message should include the museum name and exit number, not just “the palace.”

Choose one question about royal life
The museum covers the Joseon royal court and the Korean Empire. Its official overview places Kings of the Joseon Dynasty and Life in the Royal Family on 2F, the Korean Empire on 1F, and royal rites, calligraphy, science and culture among the basement themes. Use these themes to choose a starting point rather than trying to give every room equal time.
For a palace pairing, ask how a ceremony was organized or how daily royal life worked. Read an object’s date, material and purpose, then connect it cautiously with the palace spaces you saw. A royal object is not automatically from the particular room you remember. Collections rotate for preservation, so a photograph on the website does not guarantee that object is currently displayed.
A focused visit without rushing a booked palace activity
As an independent planning suggestion, allow 60–90 minutes for one or two themes, plus walking and any palace admission queue. For example, on an open regular weekday, arriving at 15:30 gives about 90 minutes before the 17:00 last-entry cutoff and two hours before closing. Arriving at 17:00 leaves only 30 minutes inside; do not confuse last entry with a full-length visit.
Foreign-language interpretation is scheduled on selected weekdays within the 13:00–15:00 period. Languages include English, Japanese and Chinese, with the meeting point at the 2F lobby information desk. This is not a promise of a daily English tour: use the selected day’s language calendar or contact the museum at +82-2-3701-7500 before making it the fixed point of your afternoon.
Inside the galleries
The visitor rules prohibit flash, tripods, selfie sticks and commercial photography, and food cannot be brought into the galleries. Follow any additional restrictions on individual displays. Some cases use low lighting to protect objects; avoid blocking a case while reading or taking a permitted photograph.
If the museum is closed or your palace booking is approaching, shorten the optional stop. The museum’s online collection and virtual museum can provide context later; they do not replace checking the physical museum’s opening calendar.
