In 1583, Hideyoshi Toyotomi decided to build a castle on the ruins of Uemachi with easy access to water transportation to lay the foundation for his struggle for the world.
This would be Toyotomi’s Osaka Castle. In 1585, he completed a lavish five-story, eight-bay watchtower with blackboards, gold leaf, and gilding. With this, Hideyoshi made a grand display of his authority. However, in 1615, during the Battle of Osaka Summer, fought by the shogunate to defeat Toyotomi, Toyotomi’s Osaka Castle was burned along with the watchtower.
