Bungeoppang (붕어빵) is a fish-shaped filled bun. Choose the filling first, then confirm how many buns the displayed price buys. 팥 means sweet red bean; 슈크림 means custard. The fish shape does not tell you the recipe or guarantee that a bun meets your dietary requirements.

Red bean or custard: what to ask for
The Korea Tourism Organization describes red bean as the most common filling and also mentions custard and chocolate versions. A stall may sell only some of these. Point to the actual sign or tray and ask which filling it contains; do not assume every fish-shaped bun on the counter is the same.
- 팥 붕어빵: bungeoppang with sweet red-bean filling.
- 슈크림 붕어빵: bungeoppang with custard filling.
- Mixed order: ask whether different fillings can share the advertised bundle before choosing them.
If you have an allergy or avoid a particular ingredient, ask about the batter and filling, as well as shared cooking equipment. A filling name is not a complete ingredient list. For example, choosing red bean instead of custard does not establish that the batter contains no milk or egg.
How to read the price per bundle
Look for 개, the counter for individual pieces, beside the number. Confirm whether the displayed amount covers one bun or a bundle, whether both fillings cost the same, and whether the buns are the same size.
Calculation example only, not a current stall quote: if a sign says “3개 2,000원,” that means three pieces for ₩2,000 (about ₩667 each). “2개 2,000원” means two for ₩2,000 (₩1,000 each). A lower per-piece figure is only a useful comparison when size and filling are comparable. Prices at the stall you visit take precedence over this example.
Questions to use when ordering
| Korean | Meaning / use |
|---|---|
| 몇 개에 이 가격이에요? | How many pieces are included at this price? |
| 팥이에요, 슈크림이에요? | Is it red bean or custard? |
| 섞어서 살 수 있어요? | Can I buy a mixed selection? |
| 팥 두 개, 슈크림 한 개 주세요. | Two red-bean buns and one custard bun, please. Confirm that this combination is available. |
| 모두 얼마예요? | How much is the total? |
Eating it hot and choosing the right food
Fresh filling can be hotter than the outside. Let the bun cool and take a small first bite. For takeaway, check how the buns will be packed and keep the bag from being crushed. Start with a small order you can eat soon; ask the seller whether another batch is coming if your preferred filling has sold out.

Gyeranppang (계란빵) is egg bread, a separate product shown in the foreground above. If a stall sells both foods, point to the fish-shaped bun when ordering bungeoppang and confirm which price line applies. Neither archival photograph establishes a stall’s current menu, opening hours or prices.
