Your First Seoul City Bus Ride: Match the Stop Direction and Tap Out

Use the correct stop direction, a suitable payment card and an exit reminder to make a first Seoul city bus journey easier.

Choose a short first journey

For a first ride, choose a straightforward route when you have time to watch the stops. Save the destination and the stop where you plan to leave. A short ride lets you practice the sequence without combining a tight appointment and several unfamiliar transfers.

Find the exact boarding stop in a current map app. Stops on opposite sides of the same road can serve opposite directions. Compare the route’s next stops with your destination rather than relying only on the bus number.

Prepare before the bus arrives

Have a transport card ready: Visit Seoul advises that Seoul buses are cash-free. Check that your card or pass covers the particular service. A visitor pass or transport product may have exclusions, so the fact that a vehicle looks like a city bus is not enough to prove coverage. Keep bags close and allow people to get off before you board.

Use the reader indicated on board. Visit Seoul explains that transportation-card transfer discounts require tapping when leaving, with conditions attached. Make tapping out part of the ride rather than assuming a successful boarding tap completes every payment step.

Watch the destination, then get off calmly

Follow the stop display or announcements alongside your map. Signal your intended stop using the on-board stop-request button, then prepare your bag before the vehicle stops. Keep hold of a handrail when standing and wait for a safe moment to move.

If you miss the stop, reassess from the next safe stop rather than trying to exit abruptly. Check the return direction and decide whether walking or another connection is more practical. Transfer eligibility can depend on route, timing and payment details; check current official guidance rather than budgeting every connection as free.
